NO GREATER LOVE

Valentine’s Day is a day when we remember and honor those we love, especially those for whom we have romantic love, such as a fiancé or spouse. Prior to marriage, the excitement and passion of new love leads many to advocate that they would go to great lengths for the one they love. Love songs attest to some of those feelings.

Ain’t no mountain high enough

Ain’t no valley low enough

Aint no river wide enough

To keep me from getting to you, Baby

Just call my name I’ll be there in a hurry

No wind, no rain, or winters’ cold can stop me, Baby

Nice sentiments, but would you REALLY climb a mountain or swim a river for me? Further, even if you had the BEST intentions, could you actually do it?

After several years of marriage and the initial excitement having long abated, you may celebrate your spouse with a card or maybe some flowers or a box of chocolate. Hopefully by this time, you have replaced the bravado statements with a deeper kind of love – the kind that is committed to staying together in the rough and mundane times, sporadically sprinkled with those tingly feelings of the early years.

Nevertheless, there is something nice about believing that someone would actually climb a mountain for you, isn’t there? It’s nice to imagine that you hold such value in someone else’s eyes and heart that they would travel to great lengths and do anything to be with you ...

How awesome would it be to be pursued by a love of that degree ...

To KNOW that no matter what, they will stand by you...

And go to great lengths to protect you...

And ensure a future for you...

In order that you may be together...forever...

Imagine a love like that ...

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

John 15:13
